Master's thesis: Development of giga nanostructured bainitic steels for the automotive application

(opens enlarged image)

Brief description:

Nanostructured carbide-free bainitic steels, or simply referred to as NANOBAIN, have emerged as a promising steel grade with an exceptional balance of strength, ductility and toughness. To achieve the high volume fraction of nanostructured bainite microstructure in NANOBAIN steels, the mechanism of bainitic subunit formation and strategies to control bainitic nucleation are very important.

In the research plan, you will first review in detail the literature on bainitic phase transformation. You will then investigate the effects of chemistry and processing method on the transformation kinetics and the properties of the resulting bainitic microstructure (e.g. size, proportion, distribution) based on experimental work and theoretical calculations under the guidance of scientific staffs.

Your applicant profile:

  • Interest in challenging material topics and the ability to carry out scientific work under the supervision of scientific staff.
  • Good knowledge of phase transformation and the relationship between processing and microstructure in metallic materials.
  • Basic knowledge of materials characterization technologies.
  • Experience in scanning electron microscopy and metallography is an advantage.
  • Good English writing, reading and communication skills.
