Guest Talk: Global Exploitation Chains. Some Reflections on Agriculture in the Global South

Hybrid guest talk by Dr. Praveen Jha on July 13th, 6:00 pm c.t.

We kindly invite all colleagues and students to attend the guest talk by Dr. Praveen Jha on “Global Exploitation Chains. Some Reflections on Agriculture in the Global South”.

When? July 13th  2023 at 6 pm (c.t.)

Where? Room 3023, Kleine Rosenstraße 1-3.

The talk focuses on one of the most important features of the neo-liberal capitalism since the early 1970s: The significant reconfiguration and accelerated transnationalization of production and appropriation systems in the recent decades, or what we designate as the contemporary Global Value System (GVS), with its powerful specificities. Of course, these systems are as old as capitalism itself, but contemporary neoliberalism has its significant markers. One of the novelties about the current juncture is the geographic dispersion / decentring of production to the South; however, the headquarters of the GVSs continue to be in the North, and the TNCs employ 'labour-nature-regulation arbitrage' to their maximum advantage. The focus of the talk is on specific processes underlying agriculture in the South to illustrate some of the core issues.

Prof. Dr. Praveen Jha is a Professor and Chairperson of the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, School of Social Sciences at the Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Dehli and member of the Global Labour University (GLU)
