In 2023, we celebrated our 50th anniversary as the Faculty of Architecture - Urban Planning - Landscape Planning at the University of Kassel. This was an opportunity to look back and look ahead.

In the winter semester 2023/2024, we continued the exhibition and lecture series entitled "The Kassel Model 1973 - 2023" and highlighted innovations and pressing issues in architecture, urban planning and landscape planning. The review of the history of research and teaching was combined with current concepts of urban activism, redesign of public spaces, demolition moratoriums, sustainable building and digitalization. Then as now, there was a need for critical and technically sound concepts on how to address social challenges. The Kassel Model stands for this self-image.

In 2023, we will be celebrating our 50th anniversary as the Faculty of Architecture - Urban Planning - Landscape Planning at the University of Kassel. This is an occasion to look back and look forward. While we are dedicating a series of exhibitions to exemplary retrospectives, the Fusion lecture series in the summer semester 2023 has combined these retrospectives with outlooks: What were the reform approaches of the 1970s and what do they tell us today? Which innovations in design education address important challenges of today?

In 1973, the new Gesamthochschule Kassel initiated the reform courses in architecture, urban planning and landscape planning. With its reform courses, the "Kassel Model" called pedagogical concepts, institutional structures and subject content into question. The comprehensive university pursued a strong socio-political agenda and rethought the relationship between science, planning and society. Kassel made a name for itself in the German higher education landscape as a radical educational experiment, which in the years that followed gave rise to numerous professional innovations that had a lasting influence on the design and planning disciplines. Many topics were anticipated that have taken on a new urgency today in the face of unequal development and climate catastrophe. At the same time, the increased number of students, their diversity, the economization of the education system with limited budgets and digitalization require new ways of relating in university teaching and in joint learning and research.
