Peasants and farmers and other small and medium size enterprises in the food system often have a
poor negotiating position vis-à-vis trading companies or the food industry. Market partners are
confronted again and again with unfair trade practices that can be virtually dictated to them by the
buyers.
For the first time in 2019, it was the aim of the EU directive on Unfair Trade Practices to increase
fairness in food trade . The directive covers unfair trade practices that are "highly likely" to have a
negative impact on the livelihoods of farmers and small and medium-size enterprises and aims to
regulate them more closely.

In our (virtual) excursion - which due to the pandemic can only take place online - we will look at
the way Germany implemented the "ban on unfair trade practices". For this purpose, we were able
to engage a very exciting set of actors into the discussions.

We invite you to join the excursion on the following dates:
On Thursday, 03.02.
8:30 – 10:00
Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food (BMEL)
→ Introduction to the policy process of national implementation and its framework conditions
10:30 – 12:00
Marita Wiggerthale, Expert for world food supply and agrarian issues (Oxfam Germany)
→ Critical classification of the directive and (global) social aspects of food supply chains
On Friday, 04.02.
8:30 – 10:30
Deutscher Bauernverband e.V. (DBV) „German Farmers' Association“
→ Position of the largest agricultural member association in Germany
11:00 – 13:00
Bundesverband Deutscher Milchviehhalter e.V. (BDM) „Federal Association of German Dairy Farmers“
→ Injustice on the milk market & the problem of political representation of aricultural producers

The talks on Thursday will be mainly in English - the talks on Friday will be in German with
translation into English. We look forward to your participation.
