Thorsten Michaelis studied agricultural sciences in Giessen with a focus on economics and social sciences of agriculture.

At the University of Kassel, he works in the SynSICRIS project, coordinating in the areas research management, participation processes, research funding and knowledge transfer. Currently he is coordinating the KasselAgroForestry project with the objective of extending the area of transformation for the development of agroforestry systems for climate-sensitive species in northern Hesse (Agroforestry overview page).

Thorsten previously worked in research funding at the Federal Scheme for Organic Farming, helped to establish the German Agricultural Research Alliance (DAFA) as a network for agricultural, food and environmental research, and helped to develop several research strategies. Other areas of work include communication, extension, moderation, cooperatives, cooperation, ecological management extension and a small forestry farm.
