Senior Fellow CALAS-CELA

This winter semester 2024/25, the Kassel Centre for Latin American Studies CELA and CALAS welcome the Argentinian senior fellow Prof. Dr. Eleonor Faur. As a sociologist, the renowned professor works in the interdisciplinary field of care, an area of work that offers numerous points of contact in Kassel. Prof. Frau offers an English-language block seminar on the subject for various degree programmes.

In addition to her academic work, Prof. Faur has worked on gender and human rights issues in international organisations such as the UN, UNICEF and UNFPA. She has specialised in the following topics: 1) ‘Reproductive activities, care and their social and political organisation’ 2) ‘Sexual education in its social impact’.

For Prof. Dr Faur, these two topics are linked by the insight that political and social rights, intersectionality and intergenerational policies are of central importance for the analysis of institutional dynamics and the promotion of gender policies. Reproductive activities continue to be an important building block for personal and social well-being and for sustainable development.

With the invitation of Prof. Faur, CELA and CALAS are continuing their international fellowship programme, which invites experts on various socially relevant topics from Latin America to Kassel every year until 2024.

Georg Forster-Forschungspreis an Maristella Svampa

The Argentine sociologist Maristella Svampa, professor at the Universidad Nacional de San Martín (Buenos Aires), will receive this year's prestigious Georg Forster Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Within the framework of the Kassel Latin America Center CELA, Maristella Svampa will address problematic situations of socio-ecological transformation in the North-South dialogue.

Encuentro Latinoamericano CELA 2023 “Desafíos de América Latina en el siglo XXI”. 11-12 Julio.2023

América Latina se enfrenta a enormes desafíos. Por un lado, ya está surgiendo un nuevo auge de materias primas "verdes" como el hidrógeno, el cobre y el litio. En el contexto de la descarbonización de la economía mundial y de la actual guerra de Ucrania, esta tendencia parece profundizarse. Por otro lado, se necesitan nuevas políticas para abordar otros problemas antiguos y actuales, como la enorme desigualdad social de la región.

La región posee muchas de las materias primas importantes para las estrategias de sostenibilidad global y produce una parte significativa de los alimentos básicos del mundo. El peligro de profundizar en el extractivismo, es decir, en un modelo de desarrollo basado en la exportación de materias primas, es más relevante que nunca. Uno de los retos más importantes de América Latina en la actualidad es vincular este extractivismo con las exigencias de la sostenibilidad y utilizarla como correa de transmisión de una transformación socioecológica.

Con este telón de fondo, la conferencia analiza los retos actuales, así como las posibilidades y los límites del extractivismo y la sostenibilidad en América Latina, y extrae conclusiones tanto para otras regiones del mundo, como el Magreb, como lecciones metodológicas para la investigación entre zonas.
