Feasibility study of waste heat utilization from data centers in Eschborn and Frankfurt-Sossenheim

Brief description

For the cities of Frankfurt and Eschborn, close cooperation in the use of waste heat from data centers is possible along their common boundary. The efficiency potentials of the directly adjoining commercial areas of Sossenheim and Eschborn-Süd can thus be increased many times over.

Several large co-location data centers are located in the Wilhelm-Fay-Strasse business park, further expansion is planned and the area is also to be designated as a data center cluster in Frankfurt. The waste heat generated there is currently released unused into the surrounding area.

The feasibility study investigates to what extent the heat demand of the office city south in Eschborn and the district Sossenheim can be covered by waste heat from the data centers.

For this purpose, a detailed determination of the potential of waste heat from data centers is carried out with special focus on the necessary technical effort of a waste heat extraction. The heat demand and the heat load profile of the supply areas will be determined, street-by-street. Different heat supply concepts are compared and corresponding operating simulations are carried out. The developed supply concept will be evaluated economically and ecologically and recommendations for action will be made.
