Multifunctional development of rural areas in the hinterland of German and Chinese cities
Rural areas in the Frankfurt/Rhine-Main and Yangtze River Delta metropolitan regions
What functional changes can be observed in rural areas around metropolitan cores and how is sustainable spatial development supported and managed in metropolitan regions? What role do rural areas play in sustainable spatial development in metropolitan regions?
These questions are examined using the example of the Frankfurt/Rhine-Main and Yangtze River Delta metropolitan regions. The comparison of the differently sized metropolitan regions, which are also embedded in different political and planning systems, makes it possible to identify similar and different challenges for achieving the global SDGs.
The focus is on the intersection of SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
The project was kicked off with a joint workshop in 2023, which was held at Tongji University in the city and broadcasted in hybrid form at the University of Kassel.
