Virtual laboratories in chemistry study programmes
The Labster virtual laboratory provides access to a realistic, motivating and risk-free learning environment for pupils and students to carry out experiments and practise skills. For this purpose, 3D simulations of the macroscopic and sub-microscopic level as well as theory pages, quizzes and assistance are available. This means that various skills and techniques can be practised in appealing and often everyday contexts before they are applied in a real laboratory. Not only aspects of efficiency and safety can be improved, but also those of sustainability. In addition, materials and equipment can be used here that could not or should not be used in a real laboratory environment.
There are two different possible applications within the chemistry study programme. On the one hand, teachers and prospective teachers can be prepared for the future use of virtual laboratories in the classroom. On the one hand, a didactic specialisation course was offered for student teachers in which virtual laboratories were tested and their possible uses in chemistry lessons were discussed. On the other hand, a training course was offered for chemistry teachers that focussed on virtual realities and laboratories. The second possibility results from the use in laboratory practicals. For this purpose, the use of Labster is being piloted in a practical course for students of general chemistry.
