In this seminar we examine social, economic and spatial relations that interconnect the object of home with the policy of housing and the economy of real estate. Phenomenons like asset based welfare, land speculation, social surplus value, participatory process, rent control, ownership structure, gentrification, uneven development and others will be superimposed onto the design and structure of iconic social and public housing projects. We will ask a question: How is collectivity achieved as a spatial requirement for collective housing projects and how does housing produce economic interdependencies that go well beyond these projects? 

The aim of the seminar is to develop critical reading skills that help us understand how concrete works of architecture represent social and economic relations in a given territory.

Requirements for the seminar: Proficiency in English language. 

Completing weekly readings, coming to class ready to actively participate in discussion including one thematic presentation, and hand-in of an independent final paper. 

There is no final examination.
