A4: Water, material and greenhouse gas flows

In this subproject, we investigate the effects of mixed cropping on soil water contents, leachability and dynamics of mineral nitrogen and thus on the fluxes of the stable greenhouse gases nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) compared to pure cropping. We expect that a more complete utilization of the rootable soil volume with higher nitrogen and water uptake from the subsoil will be reflected in reduced N2O emissions and increased net CH4 consumption. Recurrent 13C-CO2 pulse isotope labeling will also be used to test how pronounced and persistent the incorporation of photosynthetically freshly fixed carbon is at different soil depths.
