An important component of operational sustainability development is the handling of energy. Thus, the conservation of resources and the avoidance of climate gas emissions are also tasks that the University of Kassel addresses with many projects.
With the introduction of the Intracting financing model, a tool was implemented with which energy efficiency measures can be evaluated economically. Subsequently, the identified avoided energy costs are collected on a separate cost center and invested in new further projects to reduce energy consumption.
To increase energy efficiency through operational and organizational measures in existing buildings, the University of Kassel is conducting the "Energetic Operational Optimization" project. This primarily involves checking and adjusting target and actual values and developing efficient control strategies for the operation of technical building equipment.
In addition to these projects to increase energy efficiency, the University of Kassel is also gradually focusing on the use of renewable energy sources for self-sufficiency. For example, PV systems are being installed on a large scale on the roofs of the buildings to generate electricity. The use of wood pellets for heat supply is another topic that we are successfully tackling.
In order to evaluate the success of all these energy projects, digital energy and water meters are currently being installed in all buildings. The data obtained with these meters will then be processed with modern energy management software so that the successes of energy efficiency management can be presented transparently on a just-in-time basis.
