Gender equality is a quality criterion and indispensable in the academic system. The University of Kassel sees equality as a joint task and is supported in this by the Equality Office. Faculties, research associations, committees, specialists and managers receive advice on the conception and implementation of gender equality measures: based on an analysis of the current situation, we jointly develop tailor-made solutions.

Dr. Sylke Ernst

In 2012, the Presidential Board of the University of Kassel initiated the development of decentralized equality concepts in the Faculties. In order to evaluate and further develop this process, the central Women's and Equality Officer (Dr. Sylke Ernst) carried out the Equality Consulting research project in cooperation with a sociology department (Prof. Dr. Mechthild Bereswill) from 2017 to 2019. It aims to expand existing equality structures and anchor them sustainably in the organizational culture. The aim is to expand the options for action of stakeholders at the University of Kassel in the field of research. The results were published scientifically and prepared as concrete impulses for action "Equality as a common discourse" and communicated within the university (see below).

Following this research project, the Presidential Board switched to integrating equality and diversity into the Faculties' structural plans in 2022. This process is being supported by the Equal Opportunity Committee and the Equality Office. In future, the "Kassel Gender Equality Toolbox" developed as part of the Women Professors Program III will be used.

Das Projekt zielt darauf ab, bestehende Gleichstellungsstrukturen zu erweitern und nachhaltig in der Organisationskultur zu verankern. Die Handlungsoptionen von Akteur*innen der Universität Kassel im Bereich der Forschung sollten dadurch erweitert werden. Das Projekt wurde 2017 bis 2019 als Forschungskooperation zwischen der zentralen Frauen- und Gleichstellungsbeauftragten (Dr. Sylke Ernst) und einem soziologischen Fachgebiet (Prof. Dr. Mechthild Bereswill) durchgeführt. Die Ergebnisse wurden wissenschaftlich publiziert und als konkrete Handlungsimpulse „Gleichstellung als gemeinsamer Diskurs“ aufbereitet und in der Universität kommuniziert.
