Tiles made from construction waste: SHARDS start-up team receives EXIST start-up grant

The idea behind the founding project: in Germany, over 60% of waste comes from building demolition, which amounted to over 54 million tons of construction waste in 2018. The team uses such construction waste as a material and produces tiles from it. The team creates the wide variety of colors exclusively by fine-tuning the ingredients of the recycled materials. No colorants or binding agents are used.

To date, almost 50 projects at the University of Kassel have been supported by the EXIST funding program. The funding includes personnel, material and coaching resources. The teams are supported by UNIKAT, the University of Kassel's start-up consultancy. The founders of SHARDS are also supported by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jens Hesselbach, head of the UPP Environmentally Sound Products and Processes department, as a mentor.

During the funding period, the SHARDS project team will use an office space on the start-up floor of the University of Kassel. The Hessen Ideas scholarship holders "e.core", "Veload", "Dryn.it" and "Solocal Energy" and the former EXIST team "ZAZMO" also use incubator rooms in Gottschalkstrasse.

The university's start-up advisory service offers a telephone consultation hour for interested students, graduates and employees every Friday between 10 am and 12 pm to answer questions about the scholarship programs. Consultation appointments can be arranged outside of these hours.
