Founded in 1971 as a reform university, numerous innovative concepts for practice-oriented learning and research, interdisciplinary work were shaped at Kassel University. The examination of current social challenges has been a trademark of our university ever since. The university is still young, but can refer to numerous academic predecessor institutions.
These include, for example:
- the Landesbibliothek, founded in 1580 - which today forms part of the university library,
- the Academie de Peinture et Architecture of 1777, which lives on in the Kunsthochschule Kassel and the Department of Architecture, Urban Planning, Landscape Planning at the University of Kassel
- the Polytechnic Teaching Institute founded in 1832 as the nucleus of engineering sciences in Kassel
- the German Colonial School in Witzenhausen, founded in 1898, from which the Department of Ecological Agricultural Sciences, unique in Europe, has developed.
