University research centers

The University of Kassel distinguishes between two types of central scientific institutions: Scientific Centers and Research and Competence Centers.

Academic centers concentrate on interdisciplinary research in profile-forming areas with a high reputation and third-party funding. Research and competence centers promote the institutionalization of research networks in important development areas of the university. Both categories are central elements of the research strategy.

Scientific centers

Center for Interdisciplinary Nanostructure Science and Technology (CINSaT)

Within the framework of the center, the institutes of biology, chemistry, physics, the Institute of Nanostructure Technology and Analytics (INA), and the departments of electrical engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, and philosophy work closely together in interdisciplinary research projects to advance basic research in this field, to help shape an important future technology, and to contribute to strengthening Hessen as a high-tech location through efficient technology transfer.

International Center for Higher Education Research (INCHER-Kassel)

The International Center for Higher Education Research INCHER), founded in 1978, deals with a wide range of questions concerning the relationship between higher education and society. As the first interdisciplinary research center at the University of Kassel, the largest institution for higher education research at a German university is characterized by a broad range of topics, continuity and sustainability, as well as a European and international comparative perspective of social science-based work.

Kassel Institute for Sustainability

The University of Kassel is establishing a unique scientific center in Germany that conducts research and teaches on sustainable development and transformation. It is called Kassel Institute for Sustainability and is oriented towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations, which are intended to ensure long-term healthy development worldwide on an ecological, social and economic level.

Research Center for Information System Design (ITeG)

The Research Center for Information System Design (ITeG) combines working groups from different disciplines (computer science, business informatics, psychology, human-machine systems engineering, law and sociology). The guiding principle of the ITeG is to develop information technology from an overall view of people and technology and to integrate the question of the social embedding of technology into the development process so that technology can be accepted by society as desirable in the long term.
