Invitation to a tour of the campus

On September 13, 2023, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Körner (Head of the Department of Landscaping, Landscape Management and Vegetation Development, FB ASL) will offer a tour of plant use and climate adaptation strategies on the Holländischer Platz campus at 2 pm.

Themeeting point is the Green Office, Nora-Platiel-Straße 2. 1.5 hours are planned for the tour.

In the 1980s, the so-called Kassel School approach was pursued on the public areas of the Holländischer Platz campus. This theory of open space planning is essentially based on the idea that vegetation spontaneously adjusts and stabilizes in line with use. However, a lot of work was also done with the sowing of local wild plants and ornamental perennials in order to increase the acceptance of the areas.

Since the early 2000s, the Department of Landscaping, Landscape Management and Vegetation Development has been investigating the urban ecological value of the areas to determine which species have established themselves in the areas.

The tour shows the areas around the university, which resemble typical urban open spaces in terms of their conditions and exemplify the dynamic behavior of spontaneous and artificially established urban vegetation. This provides an indication of how vegetation can be adapted to climate change.

We would be grateful for prior registration at: greenoffice[at]uni-kassel[dot]de, but interested parties are also welcome to join us spontaneously.
