Leave of absence

Reasons for leave of absence
You can be given leave for an important reason if you apply for it, particularly if
- you are involved as an appointed or elected representative on an academic or student administrative body (you must provide the relevant evidence);
- you are sick and this disqualifies you from studying in the normal manner. A doctor must certify that you are sick and indicate the probable time of absence;
- you are completing compulsory service (e.g. military or community service);
- you are spending time abroad related to your studies (please submit confirmation from your faculty). You cannot apply for leave of absence for any periods of time spent abroad if they are an integral part of your course according to the examination regulations (compulsory semesters);
- you are spending time on maternity or parental leave (you must attach the relevant evidence – a birth certificate/maternity card);
- you are caring for a relative (please attach an assessment from a medical service, which indicates the name of the person and the number of hours and days required for the person needing care);
- you are completing an internship that is related to your course (not BPS) – you need to provide evidence of this from your faculty.
Please note too that ...
- ... international students must inform the foreigners’ registration office about any semesters on leave that have been granted. It is possible that several semesters on leave do not serve the “purpose of your stay” (i.e. study) and can create problems when extending your visa;
- ... the number of regular semesters or a semester on leave may affect your BAföG, child benefit and/or the duration of your student health insurance. The relevant authorities can provide you with more detailed information (the BAföG office, the child benefit office, your health insurance scheme);
- ... any "student part-time work", which is not a “mini-job” (i.e. your income exceeds EUR 520) may affect your social insurance obligation (please obtain information from your employer).
