MSCA guidelines on supervision

As the EU's flagship program for researcher mobility and training, the MSCA promotes effective supervision, mentoring and appropriate career guidance for MSCA researchers.

The MSCA Guidelines on Supervision serve as a reference to ensure that researchers receive adequate supervision throughout the duration of their research project.

These guidelines are in line with the principles set out in the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers (Charter and Code).

The MSCA Guidelines on Supervision should be considered from the outset, in the planning phase of the research project. They continue to apply for the entire duration of the project.

Specific provisions for supervisors, researchers and institutions are provided on aspects such as:

  • Integration of researchers
  • Research funding
  • Career development
  • Mentoring and well-being of researchers
  • Communication and conflict resolution
  • Training and professional development of supervisors
  • Supervision is an essential element of successful MSCA research. It is of great importance for researchers' career advancement.
  • Excellent supervision helps to create a supportive environment for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers and research staff to carry out their work.
  • Guidance, support, advice, counseling and mentoring from experienced personnel are important prerequisites for those embarking on or resuming their careers in research.
