Exhibition opening "Guest at the Rectorate #22"

From June 26 to September 30, 2018, Nicolas Wefers will be showing his photographic works in the Rectorate of the Kunsthochschule Kassel.

Why do monumental memorials such as Bismarck towers still exert such a great fascination on many people in the 21st century? Immortalized in solid stone and metal, they appear archaic, authoritarian, unapproachable and are symbols of nationality. But how should this national charge of such monuments be assessed today? The photographer attempts to answer these questions with his work.

Nicolas Wefers is in his 12th semester studying Visual Communication with a focus on photography under Prof. Bernhard Prinz. In his work, Wefers uses historical monuments and the associated rites to question the symbolism that creates identity in the present day. In his photographs, he constructs stage-like scenes around the monument. Nicolas Wefer's works have been awarded numerous prizes such as the Kassel Art Prize.

The exhibition format "Visiting the Rectorate" was initiated in spring 2012. With two exhibitions per semester, the Rectorate of the Kunsthochschule Kassel offers students, graduates and teachers an extraordinary presentation space for their work.
