Job description

Building material testers are intensively involved in the development of new building materials and processes. They have to implement the procedures developed in theory in the laboratory. They are also needed for quality assurance and quality control in the construction industry and for damage analysis. They have to take, prepare and test samples, process and present the results.

• Carrying out chemical-technical work and measurements
• Carrying out physical-technical work and measurements
• Knowledge of common building raw materials, binding agents and their mixtures
• Carrying out sampling, preparing and producing samples
• Reading simple technical drawings and making sketches and site plans
• Evaluating, recording and presenting measurement results
• Knowledge of standards, regulations and guidelines for building material testing
• Knowledge of testing equipment and methods
• Occupational safety and accident prevention
• Environmental impact and environmental protection

Prerequisites

• At the time of starting the apprenticeship, you should have a secondary school leaving certificate (Realschulabschluss).
• Grades in mathematics, physics and chemistry at least "satisfactory" or better

Advantageous are

• manual dexterity
• A sense of responsibility

Duration and structure of training

The apprenticeship lasts 3 years.

In the first two years, training takes place in the fields of soil, mortar and concrete and in the field of bituminous materials. In the third year of training, students specialize in one of the three specialist areas, preferably mortar and concrete.

An intermediate examination is held approximately in the middle of the training period.

Training allowance

A monthly training allowance is paid in accordance with § 8 Para. 1 of the collective agreement for trainees in the state of Hesse (TVA-H BBiG).

Training location

The training takes place in the Department of Construction Materials and Construction Chemistry and the Official Materials Testing Institute for Construction of the Department of Civil Engineering at the Holländischer Platz site of the University of Kassel.

Vocational school lessons are held as block courses and take place at the State Vocational Training Center for Product Design and Testing Technology (BPP) in Selb (Upper Palatinate).
