Bigband Night - Uni-Bigband Kassel & marburgjazzorchestra*

This semester, the big band of the Institute of Music at the University of Kassel is working on arrangements and compositions by German and German-speaking big band specialists of the newer generation. Among others, pieces will be presented by Oliver Leicht, lead alto of the hr-Bigband, who will also be playing a concert with the Unibigband at the Jazzclub Eschwege in May. You can also look forward to works by pianists Rainer Tempel and Florian Ross, trumpeter Frederik Koester and saxophonist Robert Friedl, as well as an arrangement of the Kraftwerk classic "Das Model" by John Hollenbeck.

 "Sweet Time Suite" by Kenny Wheeler

After the anniversary program in 2016, the marburgjazzorchestra* is now a guest in Kassel for the second time, this time with German 

Marstatt as conductor and soloist. 

In the twelfth year of its existence, the big band will play Kenny Wheeler's legendary "Sweet Time Suite", an album-filling masterpiece of contemporary big band music.

Kenny Wheeler, flugelhorn player and bandleader with Canadian roots in London, has shaped European jazz for decades: 

on countless records on the legendary ECM label in smaller line-ups or as a member of the United Jazz & rock ensemble. 

He was the first to use the voice as a natural timbre, first in his ensemble Azimuth, and then in his 

big band, taking his compositions to a new level. The "Master of melancholy chaos", as the title of an exhibition at the 

exhibition at the Royal Academy of Music about Wheeler's work, died in 2014.

As flugelhorn soloist and conductor, the marburgjazzorchestra* is working with German Marstatt for this unique project - no stranger to Kassel.
