For many years, the department Mechanical Behaviour of Materials (formerly Quality and Reliability) has been dealing with the investigation of the damage and failure behaviour of components made of metallic, ceramic and polymer materials. Experimental (fatigue experiments, in-situ surface scanning, EBSD, µCT) and numerical methods (FEM, CPFEM, XFEM) are used to analyze the damage mechanisms of a material. Recently, the activities of the department have been extended to include damage and failure mechanisms under tribological stress.

In view of the planned joint projects and the strategic further development of the Institute of Materials Engineering, a further sharpening and differentiation of the contents of the field in the direction of safety and reliability of materials is planned.

Potential applicants have excellent academic credentials in at least one of the following research fields:

  • Analysis of the damage and failure behavior of materials and composite materials made of metal, ceramics or plastics
  • Use and further development of multi-scale methods of material characterization
  • Usage and further development of numerical methods for the analysis and interpretation of damage and failure mechanisms

The expertise in the above-mentioned research fields is supported by internationally visible publications in scientific journals. The acquisition of research funds (third-party funding) is expected. Experience in this respect must be presented.

In addition to the material technology lectures and internships in the basic studies for the degree courses in mechanical engineering, the teaching tasks also include in-depth courses for higher semesters. In addition the department participates in the services of the department for further courses of study. The willingness to give lectures in English is expected. The acquisition of third-party funds is also expected. Evidence of experience in this area must be provided.

The prerequisites for employment and performance requirements are determined by §§ 61, 62 of the Higher Education Act of the Federal State of Hesse. This position is of indefinite duration.
