Journalism workshop: Profession with a future or can it go away?

Media crisis, lying press - journalism has seen better times. And yet it remains a dream job for many. But what does the job of a journalist actually entail and does it offer career starters good prospects despite gloomy forecasts?

For two days, participants in this workshop can immerse themselves in the theory and practice of the journalism profession. What tasks does journalism have in society and (how) can it fulfill them? What does everyday journalism look like and where does it take place? What is involved in the craft and how can it be learned? What employment opportunities are there and what are the prospects for the future?

The individual learning contents are developed and discussed together in the group. At the same time, a small writing workshop will allow participants to try their hand at writing with a pen or keyboard. There will also be enough time to ask questions to practitioners from various journalistic professions.

Contents:

-Tasks of journalism in the past and today
-Framework conditions and business models in the course of time
-Professional profiles and occupational fields: Where do journalists work, as what and for whom?
-Old, new and social media and what they mean for journalism and journalists
-The tools of the trade: What is "good writing" and can it be learned?
-Writing for online: How the internet hasn't turned everything on its head, but a lot
-News and features: the basics and the supreme discipline
-Free writing: How to live and write as a freelancer?

The course is offered by the Faculty 02 Humanities and Cultural Studies, but is also open to students from other departments, subject to capacity. A certificate of attendance will be issued for active participation in both workshop days. In addition, 1 credit for additive key competencies (credit type "Key competency events of the University of Kassel") can also be earned by submitting a small final paper.
