The position is initially limited for 3 years (qualification position according to § 65 HHG in connection with § 2 Abs. 1 WissZeitVG). The possibility of doctoral studies is given.

Tasks:

The focus of the research and development tasks is in the area of digital image processing and machine learning (ML) with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). Part of the tasks is part of a LOEWE project in this area, where system integration aspects are also worked on. Specifically, the project is concerned with the implementation and comparison of conventional and CNN-based image processing and image analysis methods and their implementation on FPGA or system-on-chip (SoC) hardware for industrial applications. The aim is to investigate and improve both the suitability of the methods and their efficiency. Within the scope of the project, a prototype is to be created as a demonstrator. Design and optimization algorithms for the generation of hardware structures in high-level synthesis and for neural networks are developed and tested at the department. These methods are to be improved and applied to the problem in the context of the research activity.

This requires a sound knowledge of hardware design of digital logic (e.g., VHDL or Verilog) and in handling machine learning environments (e.g., TensorFlow, Python). Likewise, experience with handling current FPGA design software should be available. For programming and system integration, programming experience, e.g. in C/C++ or Java, is desirable. Prior knowledge of Matlab would be an advantage.

Requirements:

The position requires a very good degree in one of the scientific university courses of computer science, electrical engineering, information systems engineering or similar and requires strong methodological and analytical skills as well as a good command of written and spoken English. Good German language skills would be an advantage for collaboration within the project, the department and with students.

Opportunity to prepare for a PhD will be provided. The performance of the service in the project serves at the same time the scientific qualification of the applicant.

The Department of Electrical Engineering/Computer Science aims to increase the number of women in the scientific field and therefore especially encourages women to apply.
