Research Colloquium of INCHER-Kassel: Institutional and social permeability of educational pathways to higher

In Switzerland, Universities of Applied Sciences, Universities of Teacher Education and two new vocationally oriented school programs that provide access to higher education were implemented since the mid-1990s. The respective reforms aimed at opening up new pathways to, and at reducing social inequalities in the access to higher education. We ask how the institutional permeability of the different pathways has impacted on social inequalities in university access. We analyze longitudinal register data to model educational transitions for the 2012 cohort of upper secondary graduates (N=8,925). Results show that social inequality in higher education access is significantly mediated by pathway-specific social composition and institutional permeability.
