Concert: LAILA BIALI & Trio

Anyone who has experienced the Canadian singer-songwriter and jazz pianist LAILA BIALI live with her trio will never forget how concentrated energy and joy of playing are presented with such lightness and tenderness that one is always inclined to suspect a telepathic connection between the musicians.

The artist has won many awards in Canada and the USA; for example, in 2019 she won a JUNO Award in the category "Vocal Jazz album of the year", SOCAN awarded her in the "Excellence in Songwriting" section and the renowned Down Beat Magazine listed Laila Biali's album Out of Dust as "Best Album of the year" in 2020. Before launching her solo career, she had attracted attention as an accomplished background singer for pop star Sting , including the legendary TV Winter Concert live from Durham Cathedral (currently in the ZDF Mediathek at https://www.zdf.de/kultur/pop-around-the-clock/sting-124.html ).

Through a cooperation with the Institute of Music (IfM) at the University of Kassel, there is now a unique opportunity to experience Laila Biali and her trio (Ben Wittman, drums; Fabian Timm, bass) live free of charge on March 14. This is made possible by the fact that the artist and her trio will be holding workshops for IfM students during the day, and this unusual teaching offer will be crowned by a public "house concert".

Surprisingly, Laila Biali's mother grew up in Magazinstraße - less than 300m away from the IfM - which made the cooperation with the University of Kassel a matter of the heart for her.

Due to the early start time of 6 p.m., it is easily possible to move on to the Theaterstübchen afterwards for the concert of Jörn & the Michaels - by the way, all former students of the IfM - within the Kassel Jazz Spring: A Piano-Jazz-Doublepack of the extra class.

MASTERCLASS AND WORKSHOP

Students of the Institute of Music have the unique opportunity to take part in a masterclass led by LAILA BIALI - or at the same time in a rhythm section workshop with her drummer BEN WITTMAN on the topic "Flow" (INTERN/ONLY STUDENTS OF THE IfM).
