Lecture in the tropical greenhouse Witzenhausen: Biodynamic vegetable breeding

Michael Fleck, the managing director of Kultursaat e.V. in Echzell, reports on the work of the non-profit association, which researches, maintains and develops varieties. The 30 or so breeders at Kultursaat work on the preservation and further development of cultivable, seed-resistant vegetable varieties for organic cultivation. In this way, they make an indispensable contribution to the preservation and further development of the biological diversity of our vegetables. Colorful, well-formed vegetables are not only pleasing to the eye and enhance our quality of life, but are also a key element in our food security.
Breeders develop four to eight non-GMO variety candidates each year and report them to the Federal Office of Plant Varieties. Kultursaat is now responsible for just over 120 new varieties. Variety development is a constant balancing act between the requirements of commercial cultivation, the necessary uniformity for official approval and the proper handling of the plant.
After the lecture, there will be an opportunity to look at some varieties in the teaching and learning garden with vegetable gardener Cathrin Merx and Michael Fleck.
