Prof. Dr. Christian Jaser

Prof. Dr. Christian Jaser took up the professorship for Medieval History on November 1, 2023. From 2020 to 2023, he was University Professor of Medieval History and Ancillary Historical Sciences at the University of Klagenfurt. He completed his doctorate at Humboldt University in Berlin on the topic of "Ritual and ceremonial forms of excommunication in the Middle Ages". He habilitated there in 2019 with an award-winning thesis on urban sports cultures of the 15th and early 16th centuries using the example of Italian and Upper German horse races.
Christian Jaser teaches and researches the European history of the Middle Ages in a variety of ways. His work focuses on historical exclusion processes and conflict practices, pre-modern sport and competition cultures as well as political medieval appropriations in the 20th and 21st centuries.
