University of Kassel continues to invest in energy-efficient operation

A total of 18 important individual projects are on the agenda: large items include, for example, energy-related renovations at the Wilhelmshöher Allee (estimated total costs around 2.5 million euros), Witzenhausen (former student hall of residence, around 1 million euros) and Holländischer Platz (Institute of Engineering III building, around 7.52 million euros). Other measures include roof renovations, renewal of outdoor lighting, installation of photovoltaic systems, connections to district heating or the installation of decentralized room temperature controllers and much more. The individual measures will be implemented from mid-2024. The total costs are estimated at 15.6 million euros, of which the University of Kassel is financing 9.2 million euros as its own contribution from the energy fund. 6.4 million euros are planned from funding from the state of Hesse.

Dr. Oliver Fromm, Chancellor of the University of Kassel: "Even in tight financial times, we must invest in the future. With the planned renovation and energy efficiency measures at all university locations, we are reducing energy consumption costs and thus permanently reducing the financial burden and risks for the university. We are also making a significant contribution to reducing_{CO2 emissions}."

Background:
The basis for this is the university's 2023 business plan, which provided for the establishment of an energy fund into which all areas of the university contributed 10 percent of their reserves. The energy fund was intended to finance the sharp rise in energy costs as well as energy-saving measures and investments in renewable energy sources. The latter also include the COME projects (COME=CO2 reduction and energy efficiency increase in state properties) funded by the state of Hesse, for which the University of Kassel has to make its own contribution.
