New edited volume by Prof. Dr. Andreas Braun and Dr. Danny Tröger on Eco-Industrial Development: Contributions from a German-Chilean Research Partnership

Andreas Braun, Gabriel Espinosa Gutiérrez, Danny Tröger and Thomas Hirth present the collected results of a long-term research partnership within the framework of the BMBF project “IECO” (Institute of Eco-industrial Development) with three Chilean universities on the question of how industrial systems can become more sustainable through orientation towards ecological systems.

More than 50 authors from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, the Universidad de Chile (Santiago), the Universidad de Concepción (Concepción) and the Universidad Austral de Chile (Valdivia) bring together perspectives and proposals from a wide range of disciplines on five topics: Sustainable water use and energy in an urban context, Sustainable material and energy use of biomass, Eco-industrial use of underground resources, Urban eco-industrial development and Interrelationships between land use and industrial sustainability. The empirical case studies from Chile and Germany are critically discussed in terms of their potential for sustainable development in the context of the overarching concepts of the circular economy and industrial symbiosis. Another special feature is the presentation of the development of international research cooperations, reflecting both the relevance of these and the institutional challenges. The balanced mix of practical examples and theory makes the book suitable as a reference work on sustainable technologies as well as a basis for decision-making for practitioners and policy advisors.
