Promotion of external further qualification measures for non-academic career paths
The University of Kassel strives to make career paths more transparent and easier to plan for postdocs during the orientation and qualification phase. It is important that researchers can decide on a career path within or beyond the academic world at an early stage.
To prepare for career paths outside the academic world, highly specific technical or interdisciplinary skills are required, depending on the intended profession. These skills cannot be offered at the University of Kassel internally due to the small target group.
For external further qualification measures in these areas, the Graduate Academy newly offers up to three (co-)financing tranches per year across the university from February 2022. The target group are recognised researchers (R2, i.e. post-doctoral researchers during the orientation phase or until around two years after conferral of the doctorate). This support requires career coaching or a profile analysis by the Strategic Personnel Development and Organisational Culture Unit or the Career Service of the University of Kassel.
The measure is promoted as part of the tenure track programme.
Preparation for non-academic career paths
Eligible to apply are recognised researchers (R2), in particular post-doctoral researchers in the orientation phase, i.e. until around two years after conferral of the doctorate. If necessary, this support is also open to assistant professors, junior research group leaders and tenure track professors.
A prerequisite for the assumption of costs is that, prior to taking up further qualification, preparatory career coaching or a profile analysis by the Strategic Personnel Development and Organisational Culture Unit (EPEO) or career counseling by the Career Service of the University of Kassel was perceived.
Up to 5,000 euros for material resources, generally an invoice issued by an external provider of further qualification measures. No funding can be provided for travel and accommodation costs. Reimbursement of costs can only be made after presentation of a certificate of participation or certificate.

- Cover letter explaining the career objective (Plan A + Plan B, if applicable) and justifying which specific career objective the further qualification measure relates to and why it represents essential support for achieving this career objective. This can be substantiated, e.g. by a job advertisement or a specific career profile.
- Curriculum vitae
- Proposal / cost statement issued by the provider, including two alternative offers or a justification why only one provider is relevant
- Endorsement / acknowledge of the supervisor or mentor
Any time, but at least four weeks before the start of the planned further qualification measure
The Office of the Graduate Academy will decide on applications received together with the management of the Strategic Personnel Development and Organisational Culture Unit (EPEO) and Career Service. The decision criteria are:
- Plausibility of the reasoning
- Conduciveness of the further qualification measure for the intended career path
