Health insurance
All students from Germany or abroad must provide evidence that they have health insurance cover when they enrol. Enrolment cannot take place without evidence of health insurance cover.
When enrolling at the University of Kassel, you must submit evidence of having insurance cover (“Written confirmation for presentation at a higher education institution”, not the chip card, for example). This evidence is not yet necessary when you apply to the university. The health insurance scheme’s written confirmation must indicate your insurance number and, if necessary, the identity code of the health insurance company.
There are two kinds of health insurance in Germany: statutory or public and private health insurance. You can no longer insure yourself in the cheapest student tariff at the statutory health insurance schemes after your 30th birthday or your 14th regular semester. You can then either switch to a private insurance scheme or remain with the statutory health insurance programme and pay voluntary contributions.
If you insure yourself with a private scheme, please note that the insurance protection and scope need to match what a statutory health insurance scheme offers. Please obtain as much information as possible about the services that the private health insurance scheme offers before you sign any documents.
For enrolment at the University of Kassel you need to apply for a digital insurance certificate ("Meldung 10") from your statutory health insurance agency, which the health insurance fund sends electronically directly to the University of Kassel. To do this, inform your health insurance company of the dispatch number of the University of Kassel. This is: H0000479. If you are privately insured, you must contact a statutory health insurance company with your private insurance certificate. The statutory health insurance company will then digitally notify the University of Kassel that you are "not subject to (statutory) health insurance".
Information for international students
EU citizens should ask their existing insurance scheme to issue them with the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). The health insurance card is adequate for your study period and principally covers any emergency treatment at a German hospital.
When enrolling at the University of Kassel, you must provide evidence of having German health insurance cover. If you have an EHIC, any statutory health insurance scheme in Germany can confirm your insurance cover. If your insurance cover is not adequate, you need to take out additional health insurance in Germany.
Please ask your health insurance scheme in your home country whether the insurance cover will be adequate for Germany.
You will only be issued a visa if you can prove that you have health insurance cover. Take out an overseas health insurance policy that will be valid for your initial period in Germany (3 months). Check whether this insurance policy will cover costs abroad if you need to see a doctor or go to a hospital. It is normally necessary to have insurance cover amounting to between EUR 30,000 and EUR 50,000.
If you are planning to stay in Germany for longer than three months, please do not take out an overseas health insurance policy for your complete time in Germany. Please ask the German embassy or the German consulate how long your insurance policy needs to provide cover so that they can issue you with a visa.
When enrolling at the University of Kassel, you must provide evidence of having German health insurance cover. You need to take out insurance with a German health insurance scheme in Germany.
Those attending the preparatory course or a German language course at the University of Kassel can only take out private insurance.
The Deutsche Studierendenwerk (German National Association for Student Affairs) has arranged a general agreement with Union Versicherungsdienst for those attending courses to prepare them for university studies and who cannot obtain insurance cover with the statutory health insurance schemes.

Accident insurance
Students are covered by the state accident insurance scheme during their education and further training at higher education institutions.
Third-party liability insurance
Anybody may be liable for damage that is caused to third parties in Germany. Parents are responsible for their children. It is therefore normal to take out private (family) third-party liability insurance to protect yourself against any claims that may arise through damage that is caused unintentionally.
