CALAS / CELA
What is it about?
CALAS (Centro Maria Sibylla Merian de Estudios Latinoamericanas Avanzados) is an international research network funded by the BMBF, which has its headquarters in Guadalajara, Mexico and also maintains regional centers in Argentina, Costa Rica, Cuba and Ecuador.
A central research topic of the Kassel scientists in the CALAS network is perspectives on wealth, inequalities and sustainability in Latin America and Europe, which are researched jointly by the social sciences and humanities. This includes questions of institutions and actors, politics, democracy and economics as well as research on linguistics, discourse, literature and art.

Kassel research
At the University of Kassel, CALAS is represented by the "Centro de Estudios Latinoamericanos (CELA)". A central task of the CELA is to network Kassel's Latin American research nationally and internationally.
CELA promotes the exchange of ideas with Latin America through calls for workshops and research stays and at the same time makes university research on Latin America known to a wider public in the city and region through lecture series, panel discussions and artistic events.
The annual meeting of the CELA has become an international and nationwide meeting place and research magnet.
