Study structure

In the first year of study (1st and 2nd semester), the basic modules (33 ECTS) provide fundamental theoretical and methodological knowledge on the goals and challenges of sustainability. You will learn key terms, theories and concepts, as well as points of criticism and conflicts associated with sustainability issues. You will also learn the techniques of scientific work. At the same time, cluster modules 1 and 2 (12 ECTS) deal with practical sustainability-related problems relating to land use, nutrition, biodiversity and environmental quality as well as issues of justice and solidarity in the context of inequality and diversity. In the project module, you will deepen your knowledge of interdisciplinary sustainability research and project work (15 ECTS). These practice-oriented project modules promote your ability to develop sustainable solutions. In the first year of study, you will deal with current controversies and problems of socio-ecological transformation and learn about approaches to interdisciplinary project work.

In the second year of study (3rd and 4th semesters), you will take cluster modules 3 and 4 (12 ECTS). Here you will delve deeper into complex sustainability challenges and needs in the two fields of spatial transformation and mobility as well as climate change, the earth system, the energy transition and the use of raw materials. As part of the project modules, you will also carry out a project together with other students to develop interdisciplinary solutions to real-world problems (12 ECTS). In addition, you will choose two individual specializations from the 29 offered (24 ECTS), in which you will explore subject-specific sustainability topics and challenges in greater depth, e.g.

• Human-nature relationship,
• Diversity and globalization,
• Artificial intelligence and data science,
• Mobility and transportation or
• social sustainability law.

You will also complete the subject-specific foundations and additive key competencies (12 ECTS)

In the third year of study (5th and 6th semester), you complete the first two chosen specializations and also complete your third specialization (30 ECTS) as well as an eight-week internship (12 ECTS) in Germany or abroad. In addition, you complete your studies with the final module (15 ECTS) and the Bachelor's thesis. You will also present your project work to student groups and the city public (3 ECTS).

After completing the course, you will be awarded the degree of Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science, depending on the focus of the three specializations.
