Cultural Education in Schools: Additional Qualification for Students

Children and young people can gain completely new learning experiences at school by making music, dancing, taking photographs or playing theater. With the "Cultural Practice" study profile at the University of Kassel, students gain further qualifications for precisely this and sharpen their professional profile.

The study profile "Cultural Practice in Schools" (KuPra) at the University of Kassel will enter its second round in the coming summer semester. Participants will first receive basic knowledge about cultural and aesthetic education in the school context. In two practical seminars, participants gain their own experience with dance, photography, film, music, theater or the visual arts. Students gain further practical experience in an internship at a cultural school or a cultural institution with educational work.

"Through the study profile, participants broaden their horizons and learn which methods they can use to provide children and young people with cultural access," says Prof. Dr. Verena Freytag, Professor of Aesthetic Education and Movement Education at the University of Kassel.

In October 2020, the first student graduated from the profile. "Through the diverse tasks, I sharpened my view in the artistic and cultural field. I was impressed by how the individual main topics were linked to the current situation of people working in the arts in times of the Corona pandemic," says Kira-Helen Bothe, a student in the master's program in social work in education, training and continuing education.

"Even under pandemic conditions, we were able to offer a wide variety of events last semester," says Ms. Freytag with pleasure. Among them were offerings in dance, performing arts, performance, radio drama, scenic interpretation, improvisation, sound art and audio walk. In the coming semester, the continued pandemic will again be critical to the format of the events.

In addition to student teachers, participation in the study profile is open to teachers and those interested in other majors. The registration deadline for students is March 15, 2021, and the appropriate registration form must be completed at www.uni-kassel.de/go/kupra.

The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research as part of the joint "Quality Offensive Teacher Education" of the federal and state governments.
