50 years of the Department of Architecture - Urban Planning - Landscape Planning at the University of Kassel

In 2023, the Department of Architecture - Urban Planning - Landscape Planning at the University of Kassel will celebrate its 50th anniversary. This is an occasion to look back and to look forward. While a series of exhibitions is dedicated to exemplary retrospectives, the FUSION lecture series in the summer semester combines these retrospectives with outlooks.

In addition, short talks by alumni about their life journeys await visitors. Prof. Jeremy Till (Professor of Architecture, Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts, London) will give the keynote lecture on "Architecture IS Climate... and so is urban planning and landscape". Greetings will be given by Prof. Dr. Ute Clement, President of the University of Kassel, and Jens Deutschendorf, State Secretary in the Hessian Ministry of Economics, Energy, Transport and Housing, among others. The anniversary celebration will end with a party. Admission is free of charge. Program: http://www.uni-kassel.de/go/jubilaeumsfest-ASL

Background:

In 1973, the new Comprehensive University of Kassel initiated the reform courses of study in architecture, urban planning and landscape planning. With its reform courses of study, the "Kassel Model" challenged pedagogical concepts, institutional structures and professional content. The comprehensive university pursued a strong socio-political agenda and rethought the relationship between science, planning and society. Kassel distinguished itself in the German higher education landscape as a radical experiment in education, from which numerous professional innovations emanated in the following years that had a lasting influence on the design and planning disciplines. In the process, many issues were anticipated that have taken on a new urgency today in the face of unequal development and climate catastrophe. At the same time, the increased number of students, their diversity, the economization of education with limited budgets, and digitalization require new ways of relating in university teaching and collaborative learning and research.
