Working in Music Publishing: New Master's Degree at the University of Kassel

Music business, copyright, licensing - in order to exploit music commercially, new, up-to-date knowledge has become increasingly important in recent years. The University of Kassel is offering a new master's degree in music publishing in the coming winter semester, which prepares students for a career in the music industry.

Kassel is home to several internationally renowned music publishers and important institutions such as the Verwertungsgesellschaft Musikedition. These regional characteristics are taken up for the master's degree program in music publishing and transferred into new course offerings. "Nowadays, music publishing means not only the production of sheet music and book editions, but also digital distribution and license management to a considerable extent," says Prof. Dr. Jan Hemming, the head of the program. In order to find one's way in this field, a well-founded and application-oriented education is required.

Four partners in the field are involved in the program with accompanying courses that are firmly anchored in the course. These are the publishing houses Furore-Pan-Merseburger, the Verwertungsgesellschaft Musikedition, the Bärenreiter publishing group (all in Kassel) and the Helbling publishing house in Esslingen. In addition, there is a cooperation with the Detmold University of Music and the annual "Edirom Summer School" held there.

In addition to classical courses in musicology, music pedagogy, analysis and composition/arrangement, students are specifically introduced to layout and music notation and can choose emphases in digital music editing or music licensing. In addition, there are courses on, among other things, structures and institutions of the music industry, business fundamentals, project management, copyright and new business models.

The standard duration of the new master's program is four semesters. Anyone who has earned a music-related bachelor's degree at a university (e.g., in musicology, popular music and media, or instrumental pedagogy) can apply. Transfer after a music teaching degree is also possible.

Applications are open from June 1. For more information on enrollment and course content, visit  https://www.uni-kassel.de/uni/studium/musikverlagswesen-master
