What do young people think about the opportunities and dangers of plastics? The Department of Plastics Technology at the University of Kassel, together with the Innovationszentrum Kunststofftechnik e.V., is organizing a video competition for pupils aged between 15 and 18. The aim is to raise young people's awareness of the importance of plastics and to promote ideas for the sustainable use of the material.

The main prize of the challenge is a trip for two to Sri Lanka, during which the first prize winners will have the opportunity to help with a nature conservation project to preserve the livelihoods of sea turtles.

The second prize is a two-day excursion to Hamburg, during which the winners will visit a company from the plastics industry.

Third prize winners will have the opportunity to visit the Department of Plastics Technology at the University of Kassel. There they can design and print their own 3D figure from environmentally friendly bio-plastic.

The video entries can be created individually or in pairs. The deadline for submissions is November 30, 2023. All information about the competition, how to submit entries and sample videos: www.uni-kassel.de/go/videochallengekunststoff

Background:

The demand for plastic is increasing from year to year. However, in order to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, as the European Union has decided, engineering and the plastics industry are desperately looking for creative minds and ideas. Solutions must be found in the short term as to how plastic can be optimized, recycled and produced in a climate-neutral way.

The Department of Plastics Technology at the University of Kassel deals with a wide range of plastics topics - from the optimization of industrial applications and the integration of new functions into the material to research into bioplastics made from renewable raw materials.

The association Innovationszentrum Kunststofftechnik e. V. serves to promote scientific and professional education and training in the field of plastics technology. This includes financial support for scientific research, scholarships, publications and further training, as well as the active exchange of information and experience between members, institutions and companies.
