AURÖ Junior Workshop Environmental and Resource Economics at the University of Kassel

Young scientists from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, who are doing research in the field of environmental and resource economics, had the opportunity to present their research results at the workshop and to make new contacts and exchange experiences during the welcome reception, the coffee breaks or the joint dinner. In addition to exciting presentations and discussions, the workshop also welcomed very prominent guests as keynote speakers: Stefan Baumgärtner (University of Freiburg), Andreas Lange (University of Hamburg), Ulrich Oberndorfer (Federal Chancellery) and Daan van Soest (Tilburg University).

Divided into seven parallel sessions, a total of 36 young researchers presented their current work (20 minutes presentation plus 10 minutes discussion by a discussant and the audience) from all areas of environmental and resource economics. The diversity of the program was also reflected in the methods used (case studies, experimental research, empirical analysis, theoretical modeling).

The first keynote lecture was given on Tuesday afternoon, entitled "Pollution, habits and environmental policy" by Daan van Soest of Tilburg University. This was followed in the evening by a panel discussion on "Challenges for publishing in environmental economics journals", in which Stefan Baumgärtner (Co-Editor-in-Chief of Ecological Economics), Andreas Lange (Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management), and Daan van Soest (former Co-Edior-in-Chief of Resource and Energy Economcis) gave insights into their (side) work as editors of environmental economics journals and answered the many questions of the young scientists. Last but not least, the talk also touched on the smoldering conflict over Plan S (an initiative to make research findings publicly available), in which research institutes and funders on the one hand and scientific publishers on the other are pitted against each other. The third and final keynote presentation on Wednesday morning then rounded out the workshop with insight from the field. Ulrich Oberndorfer from the Federal Chancellery spoke on "Global governance and global public goods".
