Series of events on gender studies enters second semester

What are actually men? What are actually women? How exactly is the relationship between the sexes to be determined? According to Prof. Dr. Birgit Riegraf (University of Paderborn) from the organizing team, these and similar questions have occupied women's and gender studies since the very beginning. Hardly any other field of knowledge has developed so dynamically in recent decades, she said, and hardly any other field of knowledge is so innovative. "At the same time, hardly any other field of knowledge has been so controversial," says Riegraf, "because it so fundamentally puts up for discussion knowledge that was thought to be safe and what was unquestionably given." In the meantime, women's and gender studies have become a recognized and self-evident part of many fields of knowledge, he said.

As in the summer semester, representatives of women's and gender studies will approach the question of how the category of gender is received in the science system, partly in dialogue form, in four events in the winter semester. Also discussed will be the question of how the category of gender has entered and changed the body of knowledge in education, the humanities, and literary studies.

The joint series is the result of cooperation between the two presidencies. What is new is that it takes place simultaneously across two regions and locations, this winter semester at the University of Paderborn. The events are broadcast live to the University of Kassel. In the summer semester of 2016, it was the other way around, allowing for intensive discussion across two universities. The series of events is organized at the University of Kassel by Prof. Dr. Mechthild Bereswill and Prof. Dr. Elisabeth Tuider and at the University of Paderborn by Prof. Dr. Barbara Rendtorff and Prof. Dr. Birgit Riegraf.
