Record: 520 students get a taste of university life

Around 520 schoolchildren from the region will be taking a "taster course" at the University of Kassel from January 16 to 20. That is more than ever before.

The senior high school students come from eleven schools in Kassel and the neighboring districts (Friedrichsgymnasium, Herderschule, Friedrich-List-Schule, Wilhelmsgymnasium, Paul-Julius-von-Reuter Schule, Elisabeth-Knipping-Schule and Max-Eyth-Schule from Kassel, Wilhelm-Filchner-Schule in Wolfhagen, Albert-Schweitzer-Schule in Hofgeismar, Theodor-Heuss-Schule in Homberg/Efze and Gustav-Stresemann-Gymnasium in Bad Wildungen). Individual participation is also possible for students from other schools. Around 380 students from eight schools took part in the last round in January 2016.

The students will study for a week in the regular course of a subject of their own choice. They take part in lectures, seminars and exercises in their chosen subject to get an impression of the content and requirements of a course of study they might want to study after leaving school.

In additional meetings with lecturers and students, the students will be able to clarify whether their expectations of the course of study are realistic, what skills they should bring with them for a course of study, or in which fields of work they can later work.

The trial study was first carried out in 2006 by the General Student Advisory Service of the University of Kassel with three Kassel high schools and about 60 participants. This annual offer is intended to improve the transition from school to university and provide qualified support for students in their decision-making process. The number of cooperating schools and the number of participants have increased continuously since then.
