Bigband Night - Uni-Bigband Kassel & marburgjazzorchestra*

This semester, the big band of the Institute of Music at the University of Kassel is working on arrangements and compositions by German, or German-speaking big band specialists of the newer generation. Among others, pieces by Oliver Leicht, lead alto of the hr-Bigband, who will also perform a concert with the unibigband at the Jazzclub Eschwege in May, will be presented. You can also look forward to works by pianists Rainer Tempel and Florian Ross, trumpeter Frederik Koester and saxophonist Robert Friedl, as well as an arrangement of the Kraftwerk classic "Das Model" by John Hollenbeck.

 "Sweet Time Suite" by Kenny Wheeler.

After its anniversary program in 2016, the marburgjazzorchestra* is now a guest in Kassel for the second time, this time with German 

Marstatt as leader and soloist. 

In its twelfth year, the big band will perform Kenny Wheeler's legendary "Sweet Time Suite," an album-length 

masterpiece of contemporary big band literature from 1990. 

Kenny Wheeler, a flugelhorn player and bandleader with Canadian roots in London, has left his mark on European jazz for decades: 

On countless records on the legendary ECM label in smaller lineups or as a member of the United Jazz & rock ensemble. 

He was the first to use the voice as a sound color as a matter of course, first in his ensemble Azimuth, and then also in his 

big band, thus raising his compositions to a new level. The "Master of melancholic chaos," as the title of an 

exhibition at the Royal Academy of Music on Wheeler's work, died in 2014.

As soloist on flugelhorn and conductor, the marburgjazzorchestra* collaborates for this unique project with German Marstatt 

who is no stranger to Kassel, where he taught for many years.
