The position is initially limited for 2 years (§ 2 Abs. 1 WissZeitVG); the possibility of doctoral studies is given.

The Department of Energy Management and Operation of Electrical Networks (e²n) conducts research on the technically and economically optimized design, control and operational management of the future, decentralized energy supply system (smart grid) with a high proportion of renewable energies as an important challenge of the energy transition to ensure a secure, cost-efficient and sustainable energy supply. In this exciting, extensive subject area, the e²n department is closely linked to the Fraunhofer Institute for Energy Economics and Energy System Technology IEE at the Kassel site through personnel links and numerous joint projects.

We are looking for reinforcement for our research team in the following main research areas:

  • The development and comparative testing of possible measures for the control and stabilization of electrical distribution grids in the high, medium and low voltage levels while maximizing the absorption capacity of decentralized, preferably renewable energy suppliers.
  • The security of supply of energy networks as a function of different network structures, operational management strategies and ICT architectures.
  • The assessment and improvement of resilience in multimodal energy supply systems.

Your tasks:

Exciting tasks for independent research in the area of simulation and optimization of power grids await you in our team, such as:

  • The development of operational management solutions for reactive power management, voltage stability, congestion management, loss minimization, etc.
  • The development of optimization algorithms for (n-1)-secure optimal power flow tools with open source languages (pyomo, julia, ...)
  • The development of distributed optimization algorithms for resilient operations in distribution networks (e.g., agent-based operations).
  • The development of strategies to improve the resilience of multimodal power systems.
  • Teaching Tasks

Requirements:

  • Academic university degree in electrical engineering completed with very good results.
  • Independent and goal-oriented working style and enjoyment of scientific work.
  • Ideally, you already have experience in scientific publishing, e.g. as (co-)author of an international scientific publication.
  • Experience in modeling and simulation of power engineering issues, especially with respect to simulation software and optimization algorithms for operations management in distribution grids.
  • Mathematical and theoretical understanding of complex systems.
  • Very good knowledge in programming and modeling of power engineering issues e.g. in Python, MATLAB/Simulink is necessary.
  • You have a structured way of working, which enables you to perform software developments in a team.
  • You are curious about the challenges of grid integration of renewable energies.
  • We expect you to have a very good command of written and spoken German and English.
