From philosophy doctoral student to content creator: professional biography with Charlotte Suhr

Charlotte Suhr studied philosophy and began a doctorate after completing her Master's degree. While preparing for her doctorate, she learned first-hand that humanities subjects are often unable to offer their doctoral students much financial support. In addition, Charlotte's entry into the job market coincided with the start of the pandemic and the first lockdowns. After completing her Master's degree in spring 2020, she had to apply for Hartz 4 because the job market was empty. In a year and a half, she wrote over 100 applications and still couldn't find a job.

In addition to the ongoing application processes, Charlotte invested a lot of time and energy in her Instagram channel @chaarlottchen. Originally launched in 2019 as a (hobby) sports channel, @chaarlottchen developed into Charlotte's outlet for moral philosophy, feminism, discrimination and social justice. On @chaarlottchen, she combines her scientific approach with her areas of interest and creates something that is rarely achieved in academia: well-researched, but also linguistically and substantively accessible contributions on current social, societal and pop-cultural phenomena. When she realized that more and more people were interested in her texts, she began to turn her former hobby into a profession with a weekly column on Steady. Recently, she has also been increasingly publishing personal articles on the subject of neurodivergence from the perspective of those affected. Charlotte also works as a blogger, podcaster, Youtuber and speaker and last year re-edited a collection of her columns and self-published them as a book.

On May 11, 2023, she will talk to us about her studies, her time as a doctoral student, her application phase and the long road to self-employment. The event will take place online via Zoom.
