The "Bündnis Yousef Shaban", a student university group with a pro-Palestinian focus, has registered an assembly for next Thursday (24.10.) between 12:00 and 15:00, partly on campus. As the campus grounds are legally considered a public space, the responsibility for making the relevant decisions lies not with the university, but with the city of Kassel. The responsible public order office saw no reason to prohibit the event. The university management accepts the right to freedom of assembly and freedom of expression in the form of peaceful protests. All university members should feel safe on campus. Therefore - despite all understandable emotional concern on both sides - all forms of discrimination, intimidation and agitation must be refrained from.

We refer to the publicly displayed banners on which the university makes it clear in what context it wishes to communicate about the war in the Middle East. It states, among other things: Israel's right to exist and the right of the Palestinians to their own state are beyond question for us. We appeal to the organizers to hold the meeting peacefully in memory of the former student of the University of Kassel, Yousef Shaban, who was killed in the Gaza war.

As the campus grounds are legally considered a public space, the responsibility for making the relevant decisions lies not with the university, but with the city council of Kassel. The responsible city office for public order saw no reason to prohibit the event. The university management accepts the right to freedom of assembly and freedom of expression in the form of peaceful protests. All university members should feel safe on campus.
