The Kassel region is one of the five regions in Germany that are particularly affected by the current structural change in the automotive industry. According to an IW-Consult study from April 2024, around 18,100 employees in the region are assigned to the production-related automotive industry, which corresponds to around 9.7 percent of all employees.

In order to meet this challenge, the University of Kassel is involved in the Kassel Region Transformation Network (tregks). The aim of this network is to maintain the region as an innovative and sustainable production location for the mobility industry.

A decisive step in this project is the publication of a competence atlas by the university. This is aimed primarily at small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the North Hesse region that are active in the automotive industry. "Like a road atlas, it is intended to support companies or institutions in the region in their search for suitable contacts and possible cooperation partners at the university," says Daniel Opper, Head of UniKasselTransfer.

With a large number of specialist areas from a wide range of research fields at the university, the Competence Atlas covers a broad spectrum of forward-looking topics and expertise. These range from traditional engineering sciences such as electrical and drive engineering, mechatronics and mechanics to the topics of digitalization and AI. In addition, specialist areas are represented that deal with issues from the fields of sociology and psychology. The cooperation and service offerings of the respective specialist areas are correspondingly diverse and extensive: They include consulting on specific questions and problems, the analysis and optimization of production processes, the development of individual hardware and software, the use of test and measuring stands and support in project and change management.

The cooperation between companies and the university's specialist areas holds immense creative potential and leads to innovative, concrete solutions. The entire region can benefit from this. Contacting the departments is quick and easy and does not involve any costs. A digital version of the competence atlas is available on the UniKasselTransfer website.
