Sustainability Communication (Bachelor)

Be prepared to recognize, discuss and independently shape complex issues of our time such as environmental awareness, climate change, social justice and responsibility, resource conservation, digitalization, fairness and biodiversity. To this end, you will acquire basic skills and working techniques in the humanities and cultural studies in order to use them specifically for sustainability issues: Learn more about how language works and its function as an instrument of power.

You will also learn how sustainability issues are used in social media, advertising and public discussions and what impact they have in society. Project work and the use of digital tools for data analysis will allow you to expand your practical knowledge and apply it directly.

Course structure and content

You can design your studies flexibly according to your interests and thus better understand and actively shape the sustainable development of our world: Choose from over 20 modules related to sustainability and deepen your knowledge in topics such as crisis communication, social participation or cultural norms and values.

A special feature of the degree course at the University of Kassel is the combination of current sustainability topics with humanities and cultural studies approaches, which enable you to analyze and shape sustainability topics on various levels. Through practice-oriented projects, you can apply what you have learned directly and make a concrete contribution to sustainable communication.

Sustainability degree programs at a glance

With a Bachelor's degree in Sustainability Communication, you will be ideally equipped for careers in which sustainability and communication come together. You will acquire media skills, develop effective communication strategies and learn how to communicate ecological and social issues professionally.

Our graduates find employment, for example, in public relations, editorial offices, event management, project management, stakeholder management or as press spokespersons. The course therefore also covers core topics in ecology, economics and politics in order to open up a broad perspective on sustainable development and support your professional career.

At our university, you have the opportunity to gain international experience: In the 4th or 5th semester, you can take an optional semester abroad and benefit from the numerous exchange programs such as Erasmus, Fulbright or the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

The department maintains close contacts with universities worldwide and is integrated into international networks such as the "Centro de Estudios Latinoamericanos" (CELA) and "Centro Maria Sibylla Merian de Estudios Latinoamericanas Avanzados" (CALAS). Start on a modular degree program: first you will attend lectures and introductory seminars to learn the basics of humanities and cultural studies. In the higher semesters, you will deepen your knowledge in project-oriented seminars and a practical project. At the end of your studies, you will dedicate yourself to an independent project on a topic of your choice as part of your Bachelor's thesis. This allows you to apply and deepen your knowledge in a real-life context.
